Baby Thomas

The following story is a real step-by-step example of how a parent can use our service.

Jill* was feeling desperate and at her wits end. She was experiencing problems breast feeding Thomas, her 9 week old baby. Thomas hardly slept during the day and would scream most of the time while he was awake. Jill's main concern was with breast feeding, as she felt Thomas wasn't feeding well and this was affecting his sleep. She was breast feeding Thomas up to 15 times a day. At most daytime feeds he would fuss and fuss, pulling off the breast continually and feeding time was not enjoyable for Jill or Thomas.

Jill wanted to continue to breast feed but was feeling pressure from her husband and family to switch Thomas to formula. She had already taken Thomas to their family doctor and was reassured that he was a healthy, thriving baby. She had also consulted with a lactation consultant on a number of occasions for assistance with his fussiness during feeding. Thomas was latching correctly, but his fussing did not improve.

Finally, Jill searched the Net for help elsewhere. That's where she found Babycareadvice.com. Jill chose to use our telephone consultation service. During the initial telephone conversation, Thomas' growth, feeding behaviour, sleeping pattern and behaviour were discussed. After careful listening and talking through the problem, the consultant was able to make an informed diagnoses. Jill was very surprised to learn that she had in fact been misinterpreting Thomas' tired signs as hunger.

A breakthrough was on its way. The consultant then discussed babies' sleep patterns: what was normal, what was not, what would be a reasonable expectation for a baby of Thomas' young age, and how to gently encourage him to sleep for longer periods.

Following this telephone conversation, a written plan was sent to Jill, which stepped her through the process of establishing a sleep routine for Thomas. Over the next few days, the consultant provided follow up support via e-mail to answer any of Jill's questions or concerns as she followed the plan.

Four days later, Jill sent an e-mail to Rowena - her consultant - to share her news. In her e-mail, she said that Thomas was now content to breast feed 6 or 7 times a day. The fussiness had stopped and he was sleeping so much better. She finished her e-mail with...

"I have a completely different baby now! Thomas is so much happier and so am I. I feel so much more confident now. Finally, I can honestly say I love being a mommy."

* Jill's and Thomas' names have been changed. All other aspects of this story are true.

The total cost to Jill for this result was US$110.00
