What a Child Health Nurse offers that a Pediatrican doesn't Pediatricians provide treatment, care and support to both sick and well children and their families. Their work is complex and multifacited. Their focus is on the physical well-being of the child. Providing information or advice to parents about caring for their healthy child is only one part of a Pediatrician's role, wheareas the expertise of Child Health Nurses is specifically focused on providing parenting advice for the well baby/child. Child Health Nurses provide the necessary time to assist parents to resolve complex problems such as maternal exhaustion, feeding difficulties (breast or bottle) and unsettled behaviour such as inconsolable crying and/or sleep problems. The information and advice provided by a Child Health Nurse regarding these problems is often more individually specific and detailed than that provided by a Pediatrician.
How a Child Health Nurse differs from a Pediatric Nurse or Midwife All of these nurses work with babies and/or children and their families. A large part of the role of all nurses is to provide parent education, but each of their specialized nursing areas are however quite different. The expertise of Pediatric Nurses lies in caring for and educating parents to care for children who are ill or have a disability. In addition to assisting with the birth, Midwives provide pre-natal, ante-natal and post-natal education, including feeding and care of the baby up to 1 month of age. Child Health Nurses support parents by providing information and guidance on maternal health and on caring for healthy children, from birth to 18 years.
For UK clients: How a Child Health Nurse is different from a Health Visitor Health Visitors have a wide ranging general knowledge regarding the promotion of health across the entire human life span, from birth to old age. Where as Child Health Nurses knowledge and expertise is specific to the health promotion of well babies and children up to the age of 18 years, therefore information or advice regarding a well baby or child care problem received from a Child Health Nurse is likely to be more extensive than that from a Health Visitor. |
