Nobody knows for certain what actually causes colic. There are a number of different theories, but as yet none have been proven. (We have included 16 popular theories in our Colic article). Many of these theories have merit. Some offer no scientific basis and are simply folklore, passed down though the generations.

No doubt you have met many people who hold set beliefs about what causes colic. However, without thoroughly assessing all feasible possibilities, they are simply guessing. Each baby is an individual therefore the reasons for crying could be different for every baby.

Colic could be due to a single problem or a combination of problems.

If nothing you've tried seems to work, take action. If you haven't done so already, it's important to have your baby examined by a doctor to rule out any medical problems.

BUT... if your doctor has been unable to help, don't let that stop you searching further, because colic is rarely due to a medical problem.
