It's a commonly held belief that infant gas and infant colic are the same condition. Yet, they are two very different problems. Studies have shown that gas alone does NOT cause the level of distress experienced by a colicky baby.

Often parents worry that their child is suffering from pain related to gas, when in fact the amount of gas is very normal. Although your baby may have gas, whether it be normal or excessive, this does not exclude him from having one (or more) of the many problems suspected of causing infant colic.

If you are having trouble finding a solution, maybe you've been looking in the wrong place. By broadening your search to explore other possibilities, you may discover that the cause of your baby's gas, irritability and wakefulness is actually very different to what you suspect.

If your baby is particularly distressed, the best place to start is with a visit to his doctor. He can then be thoroughly examined to rule out any physical problems or medical conditions.
