Milk allergy OR intolerance

Are you certain of the diagnosis?

Milk allergy or intolerance is often incorrectly blamed as the reason for a variety of symptoms. It is important that the correct diagnosis for either of these conditions is made by a doctor or a pediatrician. If in fact your child does not have either of these conditions, we can help you to discover the underlying reason for your baby's upset.

Diagnosing milk allergy or intolerance is not always and easy process, particularly for a breast fed baby. All too often parents are provided with simplistic advice to "switch formula" or "stop eating dairy foods". As you may have already discovered, this is not always the solution to a baby's problem.

If a child has an allergy to the protein contained within her only (or main) means of nourishment - MILK, one very important symptom to look for would be failure to gain sufficient weight.

If your baby IS NOT gaining enough weight or if she has any allergic type symptoms such as rashes or breathing difficulties, have her seen by her pediatrician. He /she can assess all possible reasons for this (and there are many).

Keep an open mind!

Where your child IS gaining appropriate amounts of weight - you may need to look beyond milk allergy or intolerance for answers to symptoms such as...

  • Pulling away from or refusing the breast or formula
  • Irritability and unsettled behavior
  • Poor sleep patterns
  • Spitting up
  • Gas
  • Diarrhea

There are other possible reasons for these behaviors and symptoms besides milk allergy or intolerance (see our Colic article). We can help you to discover what these might be.
