IS IT REALLY REFLUX?

If your thriving baby spits up and is also irritable or wakeful, it's understandable that you would start to worry that heartburn, associated with reflux (gastro-esophageal reflux), may be causing her discomfort.

Approx 50% of healthy babies regularly spit up. For the vast majority of babies spitting up causes them no distress and they will eventually outgrow the problem. Only a small number of babies experience pain or discomfort due to heartburn. Heartburn associated with reflux is a treatable condition. If managed correctly it should NOT cause your baby considerable distress. If reflux treatment is not helping your thriving infant, this may because the focus is not on the true cause her distress.

Because your baby spits up, don't let this blind you to many other possible reasons for irritability and wakefulness. It may be your baby's spitting up is purely coincidental to whatever IS causing her distress.

For the healthy, thriving child, crying and sleeplessness are rarely due to any physical problem.

Look beyond the obvious!
