Sleep

Feeling like you're losing it?

Are you exhausted from constantly being woken to attend to your baby throughout the night? Is your baby irritable and sleep deprived because he has only tiny naps during the day?

OR...

Do you have an older baby or child who fights going to sleep or continues to wake you at night when you feel he's old enough to start sleeping through the night?

Looking for answers?

For many families resolving a sleep problem takes more than a simplistic plan, provided in a 5 minute (or less) conversation with a health professional. And you may need more specific advice than what a book can provide. Sedation definitely doesn't help to resolve a sleep problem. (Sedation can create additional problems and is potentially harmful).

Every baby is different, every family unique, so you are likely to be faced with questions not answered in a book and certainly not covered in a brief consultation.

What it takes to make a difference!

  1. First, it requires a thorough assessment to investigate anything that could be impacting on your child's sleep, e.g. colic, feeding problems, daily routine (or lack of one) and possible sleep associations. Try as you might to encourage a better sleep pattern, if you don't first address these issues (and other possibilities), it will all be in vain.
  2. A little understanding about normal sleep patterns and sleep behaviors for children at different ages and stages of development is important information to have. You can't change nature, so without this understanding your attempts may also fail.
  3. A solid reliable plan that fits with your parenting beliefs (there are lots of different approaches to managing sleep and you need to feel comfortable with your choice). There's no fast fix to a sleep problem but improvement can be seen in a few short days or weeks depending on the type of settling plan you choose.
  4. For many parents, follow-up support is vital to success. Because each baby is so different, you're likely to be faced with many unexpected questions that can pop up (and shake your confidence) as you're following a plan to encourage a change in your little one's sleep behavior.

If you have all of this, your chances of successfully encouraging your baby/child to establish better sleep behavior will dramatically improve. As you can see, there's a lot to think about. No wonder it's been so difficult for you in the past. With our help the future could be very different.
