Teething is the most commonly blamed reason for irritability and wakefulness in healthy babies over the age of 4 months. Most often, teething is held responsible simply because no other physical reason can be found. What is teething? Teething refers to the tooth breaking through the skin of the gum. The discomfort associated with teething is only temporary and generally lasts for no longer than a couple of days. Many babies will experience no discomfort at all, at the time of teething. When symptoms go on and on! Often a pattern of behavior that can originally start because of teething discomfort, for example night waking, can continue long after the tooth (or teeth) has arrived. The ongoing night waking and irritability during the day continues, no longer due to teething discomfort but due to a sleep problem. If your baby is bothered by teething troubles for longer than 3 days with no tooth in sight, most likely there are other reasons for his symptoms (see our teething article for examples). There are many other possible (non physical) reasons why your healthy child could be cranky or wakeful. We can help you discover what these might be. LOOK NO FURTHER! At BabycareAdvice.com we specialize in being able to pinpoint the reason for a baby's irritability (the reasons can be different for each baby).
