RUNNING OUT OF PATIENCE?

The toddler years can bring about some VERY challenging times for parents. It's during this time your precious child can defiantly start to assert his independence (much to your dismay). It can become very frustrating tying to work out the best way to manage these acts of rebellion... when nothing you do seems to make a difference.

Toddler troubles!

During the toddler years a child easily becomes frustrated by tasks he wants to do but is either not capable of achieving OR he's stopped by Mom or Dad (for reasons he can't yet understand). So without knowing any other way of dealing with his frustration he acts out by screaming, hitting, biting or temper tantrums.

Perhaps the greatest reason parents find this a particularly frustrating stage, is because their expectations don't match what their child is capable of achieving or understanding at this age. If this is the case, the "lesson" they're trying to teach their toddler may prove to be of no benefit or possibly harmful to the child's self esteem.

Your toddler will learn from watching you (and others) more appropriate ways of either displaying or controlling his frustrations. Until that time, he will display disagreeable behavior from time to time. How long undesirable behavior lasts depends on how you respond. Without realizing it you could in fact, be rewarding his undesirable behavior or unknowingly encouraging it to continue.
