We can start tube weaning if your child:

  • Is younger than 2 years old

  • Has demonstrated the ability to orally feed, even a little or has been cleared to safely swallow.

  • Has demonstrated the ability to safely orally feed, even a little or has been cleared to safely swallow.

  • Has fed orally within the last month (or has completed a Preparation tube wean)

  • Has a BMI ≥15

  • Has no significant medical/ neurological issues that will affect oral feeding.

Of course each situation needs to be carefully assessed to ensure we provide the most appropriate plan. Some babies will require a preparation tube weaning consultation. If you are unsure, please email us to assess further.

About our tube weaning program...

Why is a tube weaning plan necessary?

A tube weaning plan is essential because it ensures a safe, structured transition from tube feeding to oral feeding. Every baby is unique, and factors like the reason for the tube, their developmental stage, their feeding abilities, even temperament must be considered to create the right approach. A personalized plan carefully balances your baby’s nutritional needs while simultaneously stimulating hunger, gradually reducing tube feeds and increasing oral feeds at a pace that’s comfortable for your baby. By following a carefully designed plan, we can support your baby’s development, meet their nutritional needs, and help them successfully transition to oral feeding with confidence.

Do you take the tube out straight away?

No, we take a gradual, slow approach to tube weaning, prioritizing a safe and supportive transition. This method carefully balances your baby’s hunger cues with the need for sufficient hydration and nutrition, ensuring they receive enough nourishment throughout the process. By gradually reducing tube feeds and increasing oral feeding, we can monitor your baby’s progress closely, adjusting as needed to maintain their safety and well-being. This approach helps your baby adjust at their own pace while reducing stress and promoting a smooth, successful weaning experience.

How successful is your program?

Our tube weaning program boasts an impressive 95% success rate. With the support of our experienced infant feeding specialist, we provide personalized care to help babies gradually transition from tube feeding to oral feeding.

Each baby’s journey is unique, and we carefully monitor their progress, making adjustments as needed to ensure they thrive. Our approach focuses on comfort and confidence, giving both babies and families the support they need to reach this important milestone.

What if my baby has a medical issue?

We do not provide medical advice. If you believe your baby’s troubled behavior is due to a medical condition, we recommended that you discuss this with your baby’s doctor. However, be aware that a diagnosed medical condition will not spare your baby from experiencing one of many developmental and behavioral problems often responsible for distressed infant behavior, feeding and sleeping problems. So if medical professionals have been unable to provide solutions to your baby care dilemma, it might be that the cause is due to a developmental or behavioral reason, both of which are within our field of expertise.

How long does the tube weaning process take?

The length of our tube weaning process can vary and typically takes anywhere from a few weeks to several months. The exact timeline depends on several factors, including your baby’s age, how long the tube has been in place, the reason for the tube, any physical or neurological barriers, and the commitment to the program.

Our infant feeding specialist works closely with family, providing a personalized approach and adjusting the process as needed.

Can babies learn to bottle feed even after the suck reflex has faded?

Yes, babies can still learn to bottle feed after the suck reflex fades. While the reflex typically disappears around 6-8 weeks, with the right support and practice, babies can develop the skills needed for bottle feeding. By using the right techniques and equipment, babies can learn to suck, swallow, and manage liquids successfully, even if they didn’t start bottle feeding right away.

I would like to get back to breastfeeding, why do you only wean to bottles?

We focus on tube weaning to bottles because breastfeeding introduces more variables that makes the process more complex. Breastfeeding requires a different sucking mechanism and can vary from one feeding to the next, making it harder to track how much milk your baby is getting. Bottles offer a more consistent and measurable way to monitor intake, which is essential when weaning from a tube. This approach also significantly increases the chances of successful tube weaning. It provides a more reliable method to adjust tube feeds and ensure your baby is getting the right amount of nutrition. Additionally, weaning to breastfeeding can be especially challenging if there is a low milk supply. Bottles offer a more controlled, predictable transition and improve the likelihood of a smooth and successful weaning process.

Once your baby has successfully weaned off the tube and is consistently bottle feeding, it’s possible to return to breastfeeding, though it will depend on your baby’s individual situation and how recently your baby has last breastfed.

Our baby is 9 months old and we have been told to focus on solids and a straw/ cup.

During the first 12 months, milk serves as baby’s primary source of nutrition. At this stage, baby is still developing the strength and coordination in their facial muscles, which is essential for effective feeding. Sucking from a bottle or straw cup helps build these muscles, but a straw/ cup isn't yet suitable for full feedings. While it’s great for the baby to experiment with both a bottle and a straw cup, the main focus should be on the bottle, as it provides the most reliable way for the baby to get the nutrition they need. Most babies under 12 months are not yet able to drink a full feed from a straw cup. Some may begin to manage small sips earlier, but for the majority, it takes a bit more time to develop those skills. The bottle remains the best option during this crucial period of growth and development.

Will my baby lose any weight during the program?

During the tube weaning process, it’s possible for your baby to experience a small amount of weight loss, particularly in the early stages. However, we ensure that your baby has a safe BMI and a buffer for any potential weight loss before starting the process. We take a slow and gradual approach to weaning, which helps minimize weight loss while ensuring a safe transition to oral feeding. Any temporary fluctuation in weight, similar to what might happen during a mild illness, does not affect your baby’s overall growth.

When can we remove the tube?

The decision to remove the tube will be guided by your consultant, as it depends on your baby consistently achieving full oral feeds and demonstrating positive bottle-feeding behaviors. Your consultant will assess your baby’s progress and ensure they are ready for this step, ensuring a smooth and safe transition.

What if my baby has never orally fed?

If your baby has never orally fed, it’s still possible for them to learn how to bottle feed, as long as there are no physical barriers to oral feeding and they are medically cleared to begin. The first step would be to have a preparation tube weaning consultation, which focuses on laying the foundation for successful bottle feeding. During this consultation, we’ll work on building your baby’s comfort with the bottle and establish positive feeding behaviors. Once they are ready, we’ll gradually introduce oral feeding, focusing on developing the skills to suck, swallow, and manage liquids. This process is individualized and will progress at a pace that matches your baby’s needs, helping them learn bottle feeding and gradually transition from tube feeding to oral feeding.

What if my baby has sucking or swallowing issues?

If your baby has difficulty with sucking or swallowing, it’s important to ensure they are medically cleared for oral feeding and that a swallow study has been done to rule out any underlying issues. Once this is confirmed, we can proceed with the weaning process, keeping in mind that sucking and swallowing are learned skills that may take time to develop. Some babies may need additional support to build these skills. We’ll assess your baby’s specific needs and tailor the approach to ensure they progress at a comfortable pace. This may include using specialized feeding techniques or equipment to assist with their oral motor development. In some cases, further therapy, such as working with a speech or occupational therapist, may be recommended. Our goal is to help your baby gain confidence and competence in feeding, ensuring a safe and successful transition from tube feeding to oral feeding.

Do you provide any guarantees?

While we have a very high success rate of 95%, we do not offer guarantees, as every baby is unique and the tube weaning process is highly individualized. The success of the program depends on a variety of factors, including your baby’s specific needs, any underlying medical conditions, and their developmental stage. Additionally, a successful outcome is greatly influenced by the commitment and involvement of the parents in following the program and recommendations.

Although we cannot guarantee results, we are dedicated to providing expert guidance and ongoing support throughout the process. We work closely with families, tailoring the approach to your baby’s progress and any challenges they may face. While there are no guarantees, our focus is on creating the best possible environment for success, helping each baby transition from tube feeding to oral feeding at their own pace.

It works! It's wonderful

"To parents who are reading this and looking for a way to help your child tube free, you found it. This is the solution. Our baby boy was born premature at 36+6 weeks with a condition call CDH. He had to be incubated after birth and had a surgery two days later to fix the hernia. Everything went well and we were in the NICU for 46 days. 10 days later, we found ourselves in the ER again because our baby vomited everything and keep on crying. He always had the tube inserted to support his growth as he was weak after the surgery. We were told that the tube was going to be a temporary thing until he can suck well enough. We went to the ER thinking that the tube is causing the vomit not realising he has another hernia in his testicle. Long story short, just like many parents with tube baby, we struggled to keep up with the volume we were told to feed him. We would hold him in one hand, hold the tube on the other hand and walking back and forth to ensure he is sleeping and the milk is going down. Life was very difficult, we hated the tube and we know our baby boy is scared of it too. I breastfeed up until 6 months but mainly tubing until we ran out of breastmilk so our baby stopped oral feed. He had this little accident with a bottle once and ever since he would not suck on the bottle. One night while i was holding him, waiting for the tube to finish, i came across a post on reddit. I was searching for how much food does baby need to eat to stop relying on milk. Why did i search it? Because i was told that the only way for the tube to be removed is for my baby to eat more solid. I thought to myself, what happen if he does not eat enough? Even after 1 year old, he still need to be tubefed? And that is when i found BCA. I read every single review, i cried at every single one because they relate to our situation so much. I can feel how other parents with tube baby fell and if what they told is correct, that means there is hope for our family too. After three days holding on to the thought of signing up, we decided to go for it. We booked our first tube weaning preparation session with Lindsay. We sent Lindsay a video of us feeding our baby. She told us what we can do to prepare him for the wean, we follow her advice and we start seeing changes in our baby feeding behaviour. Our success story does not have a striking element, our boy just drinks more and more, bit by bit every day. Sometimes 20mL, sometimes 30mL but overall, his daily intake increases. He was 9&1/2 months when we started the wean. He was doing so well for 10 days then suddenly got sick. He had a cold so lost his appetite and his milk intake dropped from 400+ to 200. We desperately want this wean to work and we were so close to the end. Lindsay told us to allow our baby to rest then start the wean again without the need to purchase more support days. We were scared, worried not knowing if we can do this without her help. However, once our boy recovered, he started to kick goals again and then 10 days later, we were due for a tube replacement. I just took the tube out and never have to book that appointment again. Our boy is nearly 11 months old now. The wean took almost a month but we enjoyed every single moment of it. Everyday we would tube less and less and have so much free time for ourselves. Now that our baby is tube free, he is even more handsome. He enjoys eating and still not the best with his bottle. However, he is gaining weight and happy so we just let him decide how much he wants to drink. Thank you for reading our story. Thank you Lindsay and BCA for helping us and thank you to all the parents who have shared their stories. We hope your baby is well. God bless."

Successful Tube Wean - Thank you Lindsay!

"Our son Nathan was hospitalized at 3 months old due to cows milk protein allergy as well as severe reflux. He had begun to eat only "enough to survive not to thrive". During our hospital stay he had contracted parainfluenza as well as croup. We started to treat both issues but throughout the process he had developed a feeding aversion to his bottle. After one week in the hospital he had to be placed on an NG tube due to lack of intake and falling on the growth curve. He fell to the 3rd percentile for weight. 2 hospitals, 3 weeks and specialist after specialist and we did not receive any advice to get him off of his tube. The best advice we received was to wait until he started to sustain himself on solids. After 3 weeks of being 100% supported on his NG tube, we came across Baby Care Advice. After reading the feeding aversion article, we felt like we could have written it ourselves it was so similar. Then we met Lindsay and started the pre tube weening program which led to the full tube ween. After 15 days on the tube ween, Nathan was taking 20+ ounces a day of high calorie formula on his own ! Lindsay helped us every step of the way and was in contact with us every single day throughout the process. From highly detailed written out plans , to in depth zoom meetings, to answering each and every question we had, she was the absolute best. We would not be where we are today without her and this program. We would recommend this program to anyone who is struggling with a baby on a feeding tube and is looking for help and guidance. Even through the toughest days, Lindsay was there to put things into perspective and keep us level and calm. Thank you Lindsay and Baby Care Advice!"

Beyond grateful for Lindsay

"Our story is very similar to so many others shared here. At our baby’s 6-week check-up, he was flagged for not gaining enough weight—despite being just 10 grams per week under the 150g guideline. That small difference sent us headfirst into the medical minefield. We saw everyone you could imagine—an IBCLC, paediatricians, and even a paediatric dentist for tongue and lip tie assessment and release. At 10 weeks, we were advised to stop breastfeeding and move to expressed bottles so we could “control” his intake. Unfortunately, that completely backfired. We were given an unrealistic volume goal that, to this day, he has never reached. We were told he wasn’t getting enough, that we needed to feed more often, and that we should physically support his jaw because he had a “lazy suck”—holding his cheeks and jaw while he fed. We were also told he had a severe tongue and lip tie that required laser release. Looking back, all of this led us to create a problem that didn’t exist before medical intervention. Following all the advice we were given, we began to pressure him to eat in an effort to help him grow. The tie release and the required stretches were incredibly traumatic for him and only deepened his feeding aversion. At one appointment, he was diagnosed with reflux based on him straightening his legs for “too long. ”. He dropped from the 15th percentile—where he had been tracking—down to the 2nd, became completely non-oral, and we found ourselves in hospital on New Year’s Eve for seven days, wondering how everything had gone so wrong when we had followed all the guidance we were given. Not long after leaving the hospital with an NG tube, and facing a follow-up with the medical team in four weeks, I found the book. I had no idea how to support our son or whether we might make things worse in that 4 week wait. I came straight here, found the tube weaning preparation, and booked in with Lindsay. To say Lindsay is a godsend is an understatement. She helped us understand how we got to this point and guided us through the gentle steps needed to rebuild trust with our son. Two weeks later, we began the tube wean—and just two weeks after that, we were tube-free. It was an emotional journey, but Lindsay was there holding our hand (virtually) every step of the way. We’re still learning, and we will continue to learn alongside our son, but Lindsay has given us invaluable tools to support him and help ensure he feels safe and happy eating again. And now? He gets cranky with me if his bottle isn’t ready fast enough"

Best money we've ever spent.

"This was the BEST money we've ever spent. Jenn is an amazing coach and I honestly cannot say enough good things about this program. We are in awe that our little girl is now eating happily on her own from the bottle, after 3 months of torture trying to figure it out on our own with no doctor really helping us. I'm so glad we made the investment."

Successful Tube Weaning

"It was an incredible transformation. Our 8 month old son Kyle was on an ngtube for about a month due to "failure to thrive", not feeding due to bottle aversion that had accumulated for several month and dropping on the growth curve which caused a lot of stress. We were considering to go for a gtube but found the tube weaning program and decided to try it before making the final decision and so glad we did. Lindsay prepared a detailed plan for Kyle and gave us plenty of support and guidance through the week which helped us correct our mistakes and mentality. It was tough at the start but saw amazing progress after 3 days and after a week when he pulled out his tube we decided to see how it goes and have not looked back. 2 weeks since then he has been wanting to drink through the bottle and willing to try different solids."

Our turn to share our success story!

"I can’t believe it’s actually our turn to write about our tube weaning experience. Our daughter, Kali, was born at 35 weeks and developed jaundice. Due to sleepiness, an NG tube was placed. We were told it would be short lived but she was ultimately discharged with the NG tube. Here we entered the medical maze for the next 3 months: reflux diagnosis and medications, tongue and lip tie release surgery, possible dairy allergy, feeding specialists, and there was even a question of neurological reason for inadequate oral intake. During this time, she was vomiting the large bolus feeds. She was so uncomfortable. I felt horrible every time we turned the feeding pump on. The medical professionals, as well-intended as they were, were not helping us much and we felt so stuck, alone, and desperate for help. I read about BCA after countless hours of scouring the internet for solutions. I knew Kali could eat - she didn’t want to - why? I read about feeding aversion and felt strongly this was it. I was told by our feeding therapist that Kali might be too young and it might be too intense for her - but I felt in my heart we had to do the consultation. We were paired with Lindsay for the tube weaning program. It was like finally talking to someone who “got it” and someone who believed in our daughter as much as we did. We found out Kali was being very overfed via the tube causing discomfort and lack of any true hunger. We also learned how much pressure we were putting on Kali to feed and we were all ready for change! The tube weaning process was challenging and emotional but we felt supported throughout the entire process. The first 3 days there was zero oral intake. She then took about 30ml on day 4. We were hopeful after seeing other success stories where they just “took off” but that wasn’t the case with our girl. She was a slow and steady learner. We ended up needing to cut additional calories to let her tune into her hunger. We first began seeing her behaviors drastically change and Lindsay reassured us that the volumes will follow. I had an emotional breakdown when she lost 5oz after 2 weeks - it felt unnatural as a mother to let my baby lose weight via cutting calories. But again, Lindsay reassured us and sure enough we soon hit 300ml, then 400ml, then 450ml then 500ml. She gained back the ounces lost and the tube was removed around day 18. We are so incredibly grateful for BCA and Lindsay’s guidance. I can’t believe just a few weeks ago our baby was almost fully tube fed and now is happily drinking her bottles. I’m amazed and SO glad we booked the consultation and trusted our baby!!"

Bottle aversion and Sleep training

"First of all I would like to say thank you to Jen, you are such a wonderful consultant. As I mentioned, you was like a mentor, who trained and help my mental became stronger. Your guidance teach me to understand what my baby truly needs and wants. It was a very pleasure to work with you for the past 1. 5 months. I was always so anxious during the tube weaning process, but your encouragement got me through that tough time. Thank you so much! We truly appreciate you Jen! For those who was thinking if the program worth it, I'm guarantee with you all, it is worth every penny! My baby now can oral feed up to 200 mls/ feed and falls to sleep independently. It only take 1. 5 months!!"

— Boba (5/5)

12 weeks to 12 days!

"We can’t thank you enough, Lindsay! Our 27 week premmie came home at 42 weeks, and after 12 weeks of being home from the NICU still relying 70% on an NG tube, we truly felt lost. The post-hospital feeding advice we received just wasn’t working for our little girl, it was all about overfeeding and force-feeding, which left us with countless tears, sleepless nights, and so much worry. Then I found Rowena, and through her, you. I took a leap of faith because I was willing to try anything, and I’m so glad I did. Some parts of the process felt daunting at first, but with your guidance and encouragement, and seeing all the other happy reviews, we pushed through. Only 12 days later, we were able to remove her tube. I still can’t believe it! Our baby now LOVES her bottles, and our whole family feels like we can finally breathe. Life feels easier, and more “normal”, we can actually enjoy feeding her and spending our days together without the stress of tubes and syringes. We are endlessly grateful. You’ve truly changed our lives."

Tube dependent to fully bottle dependent

"Our daughter was hospitalised at just 3 weeks old with bronchiolitis, rhinovirus and poor weight gain which ended up with her being tube fed. We were bottle feeding and topping up with the NG tube, which eventually was removed as she got better. Fast forward a few weeks later, due to pressuring on our end to take more and more, we ended up with a severe bottle aversion and headed back to hospital where another NG tube was placed. Our LO ended up completely coming off bottles and we went home with training to feed through an NG tube even though all tests done showed that she was physically capable of taking a bottle. After a week of feeling hopeless and frustrated, I read Rowena's book and found this website. We decided to book a consultation with Lindsay and I'm so glad we did. Within a few days, our LO went from not even taking a bottle to finishing 2-3 oz bottles per feed. She eventually took the NG tube out herself and we haven't looked back. I couldn't recommend Lindsay or this program enough. I'm so grateful for all the guidance and help we received. It has given us our bubbly happy baby back."

To get our lives back

"Our story began when Eden was a month and a half old. She started nursing less and sleeping more. In addition to breastfeeding, she would take a bottle of milk formula once a day, but she began to completely refuse it. As a result, she was not gaining weight. We saw many doctors, none of whom diagnosed any medical issue, but they insisted on feeding her since she wasn’t gaining weight. Only about a month later, she was diagnosed with a dairy allergy and reflux, and she was given a suitable formula and reflux medication. But for her—and for us—it was already too late. We had already pressured her to eat, and she developed a bottle aversion. At two and a half months old, because she wasn’t eating enough, she was hospitalized and a feeding tube was inserted. It is important to note that every professional we met—doctors and nurses alike—said she behaved like a healthy baby, but they couldn’t understand why she wasn’t returning to normal feeding, and so the tube feeding had to continue. We were discharged from the hospital when Eden was three months old, with the feeding tube in place, and we were trained to manage it at home. As the weeks went by, she refused bottles completely and was fed almost exclusively through the tube. Around five months of age, we began offering her solids, but that didn’t go well either. She only took a few tastes, nothing more, and continued to refuse the bottle. Time passed, and we found ourselves feeding a perfectly healthy child exclusively with a tube for nearly six months. And then, miraculously, we heard about Lindsay and Rowena and began the process. Lindsay’s program was designed to wean her off the tube and back to the bottle, even though she had refused the bottle for five months and was already nine months old. We were very afraid it wouldn’t work—but like magic, we saw daily improvements in her response to the bottle, until she was fully bottle-fed again. It was simply unbelievable! We want to thank Lindsay for her close guidance, professionalism, and encouragement throughout the journey, which led to a quick and complete tube weaning. The weaning process and treatment of her aversion gave Eden, and our entire family, our lives back. I highly recommend Lindsay and her incredibly professional and precise weaning program."
