STEP 3 - Written plan: As soon as possible following the discussion, your consultant will send you a written plan, which includes the information discussed plus links to online articles that you may find helpful.

There are various reasons why a child may be tube-fed, for example...

  • an unresolved breast or bottle-feeding aversion resulting in feeding refusal and poor growth.

  • extreme prematurity.

  • a medical condition.

  • ineffective sucking and swallowing.

  • aspiration risk.

It’s not possible for us to provide an effective weaning plan for all tube-fed babies.  Much depends on the underlying reason for a child’s continued reliance on tube feeding; whether it is medically warranted or not.  We are very specific about the cases we accept.

  • Your child is less than 4 years of age.

  • Your child has been medically cleared to feed orally.

  • Your child has demonstrated that he/she has the physical ability to feed, drink, or eat safely (even if it's only a little) recently or in the past.

If your child is ready for a tube weaning attempt. We can provide an individualized tube-weaning plan that addresses barriers to tube weaning.

If your child is not yet ready for tube weaning. We can provide a plan to shorten feeding times, minimize vomiting, make family life less complicated, and prepare your baby to be weaned from tube feeds as soon as possible.
